創作 Creativity

Creativity

An artist might intentionally create works all the time. However, if you were to look at the works themselves, half of the works’ beauty and ugliness exist in a spiritual world that lies beyond the artist’s consciousness. Half? Perhaps one could say that it is more than half.

Strangely, we do not falter when questioned but do so when we speak. It is unavoidable that our souls, by their own will, appear in our own works. Don’t you think that the old masters’ practice of ‘one cut one bow’ shows that we are fearful of the unconscious realm?

Creativity is always an adventure. At the end, after one’s effort has been spent, there is not other way but to leave it to fate.

When young, studying language is a struggle
Ingenuity gets you half way, never the end
When old, one realises one’s limited strength
Thirty percent human effort, seventy percent heaven’s

The seven-word quatrains in Zhao Oubei’s “On Poetry” convey this situation, I assume. Inexplicably, art possesses a threatening aura of which we cannot know its full extent. If we do not desire money, if we do not love fame, and lastly if we do not suffer from the creative fervour that is almost like a disease, courage may not have risen in us to fight this ominous art.
